The history of the land

The farm is named for the nearby junction of Mill Creek and Little Mill Creek.

  1. 1836

A grist and sawmill is built on Mill Creek for the Shawnee community. It makes lumber, flour and corn meal until floods destroy it in 1844.

  2. 1849 to 1869

Lawrence Road, the farm's access road today, is the Westport to Lawrence Road and part of the California Road west.

  3. 1859

The land is deeded to George McDougal, one of the Shawnee delegates who signed the 1854 treaty in Washington, and his family.

  4. 1908 to 1927

The Hocker Line electric railway runs along what is now Lawrence Road.

  5. 1930s

The land becomes a dairy farm. A receipt for milk sold to the Zarah Market turned up when the old farmhouse came down.

  6. 1969

Dr. Robert W. Hamill and his wife Virginia, who bought the land in 1963, establish Twin Mill Farm as a horse boarding stable.

  7. 1990

Chip and Becky Newcomer buy the farm and improve the facility. The barn goes up in 1997.

  8. Today

Their daughter Courtney and her husband John Nelson run Twin Mill Farm.

Things to look for

The farm has picked up some local landmarks over the years.

  • The Mobilgas Pegasus

Found at an antique store in Phoenix, and on the barn since it was built in 1997. Look for it lit red at night.

  • The Horse Wall

A steel-plate fence over the arena and pasture by Courtney Nelson, 1995, cut in the shapes of horses who lived here: Shadow, Sam, Bumper, Kite, Toby, Simon and Javel among them.

  • GINny the cow

Painted by the K-State Extension Master Gardeners for CowParade Kansas City in 2001, and watching over the pastures ever since.

  • The Santa Fe caboose

Bought in the 1990s when BNSF retired its cabooses. It came with crew graffiti inside, and one boarder recognized the names from his father's crew.
